Designing an Instagram grid layout in unique ways
Great grids start with a vision, so we dug into the depths of Instagram to find some of the most stylish grids to use as inspiration for your own.
Decide on a color scheme.
This is arguably the most popular grid type — not that I’m accusing anyone of being lazy (don’t! ), but it doesn’t get much easier.
Choose a color scheme (pinks and greys?) or a tone (high contrast neons?) for each photograph. Even if the content of your photos varies, your gallery will seem like a matched set when viewed together. Influencer in the home and lifestyle.
If your house or workplace isn’t decked up like an Instagram-worthy backdrop, using the same filter on each shot to help establish a consistent tone is an easy method to ensure your photographs all speak the same visual language.
A different take on the theme? Every few postings, I’ll add a “accent” color or filter using a common filter or color palette. Perhaps the majority of your feed is dreamy, sepia-toned bohemian fantasy, but every few rows, we see a bright splash of forest green. Woo! You’re putting yourself in danger!
Make a checkerboard pattern.
You may simply create a checkerboard pattern on your grid by alternating the kind of photo you submit. Mix close-up images with landscape photos, or alternate written quotations with imagery. Going back and forth between two different hues can also work.
Keep the backdrop color or typefaces consistent if you’re utilizing text-based articles to truly make the pattern stand out. Mate and check.
Row by row, design
Consider thinking outside the box… and inside the row. Organizing the photographs in each row by subject or color may make a big difference.
Of course, the catch here is that you must publish three photographs at once, else the alignment will be wrong. Many people use the same text for each photo in a succession to make it apparent they’re three pieces of a whole.
To begin, make a vertical column.
Using squares to create a vertical, center picture in the grid is a terrific approach to combine visual branding components with photographs on your profile.
Transform your grid into a rainbow.
To pull off this style, you’ll need both patience and excellent color sense. The idea is to publish in one rich hue on a regular basis… With your next rows of posts, gradually transition to the next color in the rainbow.
Make a puzzle out of your posts.
A puzzle grid is a difficult pattern to pull off on a daily basis, but it’s perfect for a big announcement or campaign, or to establish a new account. A puzzle grid combines all of the squares into one large, linked image. These entries appear to be nonsensical on their own. When seen as a whole, it’s a piece of art.
